CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Scholastic Sports Marketing (SSM) is proud to announce the return of the “Charlotte Kickoff Night, powered by OrthoCarolina.” The event’s exciting tripleheader, the first time ever for this three game, one day format, will once again be featured at Memorial Stadium in the heart of uptown Charlotte on Saturday August 20, 2016.

“OrthoCarolina has been a proud supporter of high school football across the region for decades and we are thrilled to again help power another fantastic event. This year’s Kickoff Night will be even bigger and better and OrthoCarolina is happy to support it,” said Blair Primis, Vice President of Marketing for OrthoCarolina.

First up at 2:00pm, Charlotte Latin will square off against Providence High in a long-awaited south Charlotte public-private matchup. Although three miles apart, this will be the first time these two schools ever play each other in football. Expectations are high for the 2016 season by both programs. With this never-seen-before match up, the campaign for both schools will begin with great electricity.

At 5:00pm, game two which features Charlotte Country Day against Myers Park. This game is a rematch from the 2015 Charlotte Kickoff Night thriller; a game that was decided on the very last play of the contest. Last year’s game was the first time these two had played on another. Both schools were founded in the mid-20th century. Country Day’s head football coach, Drew Witman, was an assistant coach at Myers Park under Scott Chadwick.

For the third game at 8:00pm, Charlotte Catholic and Charlotte Christian will take the field for what is thought to be an incredible match up to finish the day. This, too, is a tilt that will showcase a rematch from a tightly played 5 -0 final score from 2015. Catholic won the 2015 4A state championships with an undefeated record of 15-0. In 2013 and 2014, Christian was the NCISAA state champion.

“The first three years of the Charlotte Kickoff Night event exceeded our expectations and today we’re ecstatic that we can bring to the fans one match up that has never been seen before and two games which will be great rematches from 2015. Memorial Stadium will be the place to be in 2016,” said James Companion of Scholastic Sports Marketing. “We’re grateful for the support we’ve received from OrthoCarolina, CMS and all of the participating schools as we all continue to provide a positive experience for the youth of our community.”

Memorial Stadium has been a sporting venue staple within Uptown Charlotte since the late 1930’s when it was constructed. While an extended amount of time has passed, the city and county have done their part to keep the historic stadium accessible for teams, events and leagues to experience. A number of renovations and upgrades have been completed over the past fifteen months, most notably a brand new press box on the north side of the stadium – including accessible seating – a new concourse also on the north side of the stadium, a new south side retaining wall, new stadium lighting, and improved bleacher seating.

A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools Middle School Athletics.

Tickets can be purchased in advance online: $10 for Saturday’s triple header. Fans can watch all three games for one ticket.
